Iris in night vision: what is it really for?

What is the purpose of the iris on a night vision device?

On forums and at trade show booths, the iris is often the overlooked NVG accessory—overshadowed by discussions about tube grade, FOM, or color. Yet, it is one of the few accessories that tangibly changes what you can do with your device, both day and night. Here is what it does, how it works, and when it becomes truly useful.

Mechanical iris vs. electronic tube protection: do not confuse the two.

Before proceeding further, a clarification is in order, as confusion is common.

A light intensification tube already features internal safeguards against overexposure: ABC (Automatic Brightness Control), which regulates the voltage applied to the microchannel plate to maintain constant brightness, and BSP (Bright Source Protection)—or autogating in newer tubes—which cuts off or rapidly pulses the photocathode voltage when an intense light source appears in the field of view. These mechanisms are electronic and internal to the tube, protecting against brief, localized light sources such as car headlights, camera flashes, or flares.

The iris is a mechanical accessory—an adjustable diaphragm that screws onto the objective lens in front of the tube, much like the aperture on a camera lens. It does not react automatically; you manually open or close the aperture based on the ambient light. The two systems are complementary rather than redundant: the electronics provide continuous protection for the tube against sudden bursts of light, while the iris allows you to deliberately control the amount of light entering the device over an extended period.

The iris: using your NVGs in broad daylight without risk.

A light intensification tube is designed to amplify very low light levels. If used during the day without protection, it is quickly overwhelmed, which degrades the image and, over time, accelerates wear. For this reason, operating a powered-on device in broad daylight without appropriate protection is strictly prohibited.

The iris changes the game. By significantly reducing the aperture, it limits the light flux reaching the tube to a level close to that of standard night-time use, making it possible to:

  • Zeroing and adjusting an IR laser or infrared illuminator during the day—without waiting for nightfall—saves a significant amount of time when training or preparing for an airsoft or milsim event.
  • Daytime familiarization and training with the device: learning to adjust the diopter and focus without being dependent on the weather or the time of day.
  • Quality control and demonstrations in the shop or workshop, in full light, without needing to darken the room.
  • Shooting and photo/video tests through the eyepiece—highly sought-after for Instagram or YouTube content—which would be impossible to capture during the day without an iris.

A useful side effect: depth of field

In both photography and night-vision optics, stopping down the aperture increases the depth of field—the range of distances over which the image remains sharp. With a closed iris, it becomes easier to keep both a nearby object and a more distant element in focus simultaneously, which can be advantageous for close-range tasks (such as DIY work, assembly, or equipment inspection).

Limitations to be aware of

The iris is not a miracle solution, and a few precautions remain necessary:

  • It does not replace the tube's electronic protection systems (ABC/BSP/autogating); it is a manual adjustment that requires care. An iris that is too open in direct sunlight can still damage the tube.
  • It reduces the overall brightness of the image—precisely the desired effect during the day—but renders the iris useless, or even counterproductive, once night falls; it will then need to be opened fully.
  • Not all irises are created equal in terms of adjustment range, robustness, and size. 
  • Compatibility depends on your objective lens threading (standard PVS-14, ANVIS, or proprietary type): check the thread pitch before purchasing.

In summary

The iris is no mere gadget: it is the accessory that transforms a night-vision device—designed for nighttime use—into a tool suitable for daytime training, zeroing, and demonstrations, all without exposing the tube to the risks associated with unprotected daylight operation.
