New vs. used night vision: which should you choose?

A complete night-vision monocular easily costs between €1,500 and €4,000 when purchased new. On the secondhand market (military surplus, classified ads, Discord, etc.), tubes or complete units can regularly be found for 30% to 50% less. On paper, it seems like an obvious choice. In reality, however, night-vision gear is one of those optical products where buying used can ultimately cost more than buying new—and where the performance specs listed on a product sheet reveal almost nothing about the device's actual condition.

This guide breaks down the real decision-making criteria: what degrades inside an image intensifier tube, how to read (and verify) specifications for used units, and where the pitfalls of the second-hand market lie.

Understanding what you are actually buying: the tube, not the case.

The housing—whether made of molded plastic or printed reinforced nylon (MJF/PA11), like our Silicate Systems LAB-NVS and LNVM models—is a mechanical component. It undergoes virtually no wear under normal operating conditions, and a high-quality housing can last for decades.

The image intensifier tube (IIT), on the other hand, is an electro-optical component prone to wear and degradation. It is the component that determines—or should determine—the value and performance of a night-vision device, and it is the part that ages. Yet, in almost all secondhand listings, the buyer cannot see the tube's actual condition; they have to rely solely on the seller's word or on an original spec sheet that could be ten or twenty years old—or even falsified.

Buying used, then, means above all buying a used tube—the housing is merely a casing.

What actually deteriorates in a used tube

The FOM (Figure of Merit) decreases with use and time.

The FOM, which combines resolution (lp/mm) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), is not fixed for life. A tube that has been stored improperly, repeatedly exposed to intense light sources, or simply aged will lose sensitivity and image clarity. A tube sold as "FOM 1800" based on a 2005 spec sheet could very well have an actual FOM of 1300 or 1400 today—without any obvious visual indication appearing in a sales photo, whether intentionally or unintentionally.

Cosmetic blemishes and defects are increasing.

Micro-defects (black spots, moisture marks, photocathode wear) worsen over time and with use, particularly on military surplus equipment that has seen heavy operational use. A tube that was originally clean may have developed new defects during ten years of storage or improper occasional use.

Sealing and purging are rarely guaranteed.

A housing that has been opened, a tube that has been transferred from one housing to another, or one simply stored without atmospheric control may have been exposed to moisture—invisible to the naked eye at the time of purchase—that will degrade the image during actual use, particularly in humid conditions or during temperature fluctuations.

Onboard electronics age too.

In older complete units, the electronic circuits (gain, automatic bright-light cutoff) may exhibit reduced reliability, with more frequent failures than in a new device under warranty. This applies to the switches as well as the automatic cutoff systems, which may have undergone a large number of power cycles. 

The real risk of the gray market: the lack of traceability.

The term "grey market" refers to tubes and complete units circulating outside official distribution channels—often originating from military surplus, private resales, or imports lacking documentation. Several issues arise consistently:

  • Number of hours of use not guaranteed.
  • What about any falls the device might have sustained?
  • No verifiable technical data sheet exists. The FOM, the tube's actual generation, and its year of manufacture are based on declarations rather than being substantiated by recent documentation from the manufacturer.
  • No manufacturer's warranty. In the event of a breakdown or rapid deterioration, the buyer has no recourse against the original manufacturer—only, at best, a good-faith agreement with the private seller.
  • A sometimes ambiguous legal status. Some second-hand night-vision equipment is originally military-grade; it therefore circulates within an uncertain regulatory framework depending on its origin and provenance, exposing the buyer to administrative complications in the event of an inspection.

For professional use—civil protection, supervised wildlife observation, or activities involving liability—this lack of traceability is rarely acceptable.

New builds: what you actually pay

The higher price of a new unit covers more than just the tube's performance on the day of purchase. It covers:

  • A guaranteed and verifiable technical data sheet, with specifications (FOM, resolution, SNR, etc.) backed by the manufacturer.
  • A 2-year manufacturer's warranty on the tube, and sometimes a lifetime warranty on the housing, as offered by Silicate Systems.
  • Controlled assembly and purging, ensuring the absence of internal condensation upon delivery.
  • Identifiable after-sales service, with spare parts available and technical support.
  • Clear regulatory compliance for civil or professional use in France and Europe (CE certification, etc.)

Over the lifespan of the device (often 10 to 15 years for a well-maintained tube), this price difference rarely translates into an actual additional cost—especially when factoring in the risk of having to prematurely replace a degraded used tube.

In all other cases—regular use, professional use, or simply seeking peace of mind—buying new remains the most rational choice.
