3 Years of Field Beta-Testing: From the LAB-NVS Mk0 (Prototype) to the Mk2

The LAB-NVS Mk2 we sell today wasn't born on a drawing board alone. It's the result of more than three years of field feedback, driven by civilian and military beta-testers who first lived with it in its rawest form: a prototype with no IPD adjustment, no independent auto-shutoff, night vision stripped down to its simplest form. What that field time taught us is built directly into the product you can configure today.

Who Is Didjo

Didjo (@didjotango01) is in his thirties, with more than fifteen years of airsoft experience behind him. A former French Navy servicemember, he's now active on the milsim circuit as an SL (second lieutenant): he leads his squad in the field and handles his team's communications on social media.

He plays RP (roleplay) under ACP milsim rules, on a private site near Poitiers combining CQB and outdoor "green" zones, during sessions running two consecutive days and two nights. His playing conditions span the full year: crushing summer heat, dry or humid winters, light drizzle to heavy rain — a weather range that puts any electronic gear worn on the head to the test.

A Beta-Test Program Built in the Field, Not in a Lab

Didjo is part of our very first circle of beta-testers, alongside other civilians, mostly former military personnel, and some still on active duty. This diversity of profiles — from recreational players to operational users — shaped our design choices for the LAB-NVS range from the outset: lightness, mechanical simplicity, standard power supply.

The Prototype That Set the Foundations: the Mk0

What Didjo has been wearing for more than three years is our very first prototype, the LAB-NVS Mk0: no IPD adjustment, no independent per-tube auto-shutoff. Two features now built into the Mk2, deliberately left out here from the start — to isolate, in a binocular NVG, what's fundamental from what's added comfort layered on afterward.

Three years of continuous use of this prototype, by the same user, in the same extreme weather conditions, gave us feedback no lab test could have replaced — and it directly shaped the design of the Mk2.

What Three Years in the Field Confirmed — and What the Mk2 Fully Retains

Lightness, without compromise. Under 400 grams, Didjo's prototype lets him skip any rear counterweight entirely. The gain isn't just the housing itself: it's the counterweight's weight removed, on top of the binocular's own weight. Over a two-day, two-night session, that cumulative difference changes everything: less neck fatigue by the end of the night, more mobility during fast movement, focus that holds up better over time. The LAB-NVS Mk2 directly inherits this philosophy: it's now one of the lightest articulated binoculars in its category.

Ergonomics built for field stress. A single central button, immediate handling even in degraded conditions (heavy rain, gloves, low light). This principle of simplicity remains at the core of the Mk2, now complemented by IPD adjustment for greater optical comfort on longer sessions.

A power system designed for the field, not the lab. The AA/LR6 platform, rather than a CR123 format, was a decisive choice for Didjo: intuitive battery changes, doable without instructions in the middle of the night, a format available everywhere — including for on-site emergency fixes. The Mk2 keeps this same AA/LR6 platform, with a stated battery life of 25+ hours, validated by three years of field feedback across every weather condition.

Durability proven over three years, across every condition. Summer or winter, dry weather or heavy rain, the prototype held up without faltering: no mechanical or electronic failure in more than three years of regular use under demanding milsim conditions. This mechanical foundation is what the Mk2 was built on and reinforced.

What the Mk2 Adds Beyond the Prototype

Didjo's feedback also highlighted, by contrast, what this minimal prototype was missing. Two developments that came directly out of that observation now equip the LAB-NVS Mk2:

  • Interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment, for optical comfort suited to every user's morphology on longer sessions.
  • Independent dual per-tube auto-shutoff, which allows each pod to be flipped up independently — a real advantage in mixed CQB/outdoor environments, where unexpected light sources (flashes, sudden lighting) or configuration changes happen frequently.

Neither addition undermines the prototype's philosophy: they build on it, without ever compromising the lightness and simplicity Didjo still confirms, three years on.
